In 2011, Dee Shaffer received received the LWVCA's 2011 Martha B. Taft Service Award at our Annual Meeting. The Martha B. Taft Service Award, named after the first president of LWVCA, is the highest award that LWVCA can bestow upon a member.

The following are remarks excerpted from a speech by Bridgett Pincus, Chair of the 2011 Martha B. Taft Award Nominating Committee

The Martha B. Taft Award celebrates a League member who is an all-around contributor to the League and leader in the general community. The award is named after our League's first president, who served from 1920-22 and again in 1932-34.

We are very privileged to be able to present the 2011 Martha B. Taft Award tonight to Dee Shaffer. Dee grew up in Fairmont, West Virginia and married in the late 1950's. From West Virginia,she moved to Normal, Illinois and then in 1966, she moved to Forest Park in Cincinnati.

Dee is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati. Soon after she moved to Cincinnati, Dee started working at Channel 48 (WCET TV) as a volunteer. Forty years later, she retired from the station as Senior Vice-President of Finance and Administration.

Dee joined the League of Women Voters in 1994. Her League experience includes Vice President of Finance; League Treasurer; Director of Planned Giving; Education Fund Treasurer; Nominating Committee; and Nominating Committee Chair.

Dee is like the "Energizer Bunny." In her retirement, she continues to be deeply involved in with community organizations. She currently serves as Senior Director of Finance for Building Healthy Lives for Women Foundation; serves on Boards of Directors for Communication Arts Credit Union; the Ohio Business and Professional Women Retirement Living, Inc; Treasurer of the Cincinnati Business and Professional Women's Club and Treasurer of the Zonta Club of Cincinnati. She also has served as Senior Director of Finance for the National Speaking of Women's Health Foundation; Urban Appalachian Council, and Our Lady of the Rosary Church.

Dee is the very proud mother of four children: Tom, Sharon, Carol and Mike. She is grandmother to six grandchildren; Heather, Tiffany, Kristie, Tyler, Rebekah and Trevor. In her "spare time," she enjoys spending time with her grandchildren and attending musicals and the Ballet.
