Marjorie's Story

Marjorie DaviesMarjorie Davies received the LWVCA's 2012 Martha B. Taft Service Award at our Annual Meeting. The Martha B. Taft Service Award, named after the first president of LWVCA, is the highest award that LWVCA can bestow upon a member.

The following article was originally published in our June/August 2012 Voter newsletter:

Sherrie Heyse presented our chapter's highest honor, the Martha B. Taft award, at this year's Annual Meeting with the following words:

"The Martha B. Taft award is given each year to an outstanding member who has contributed time, talent and energy to the League. The recipient this year joined the League in 1991 and has served in almost every leadership role including President. She has shared her expertise (she is a CPA) in the financial field by chairing almost all the financial positions and has been Finance/Fundraising VP for the last few years. By now, I know you realize our recipient for the Martha B. Taft award is Marjorie Davies."

Marjorie was taken by surprise, and she had spent the day previous working with Sherrie, who never breathed a word or gave any hint of what was to come.

Sherrie was not exaggerating about the diversity of leadership roles Marjorie has filled.

She has served as LWVCA Education Fund secretary; Steiner Fund Trustee, Chair of Vision Committee and the Investment Committee. She has served as Finance VP, Education Fund Treasurer and Chair of Budget and Funding & Development Committees; and of course, as President. She is currently our Fund Development VP.

For all her expertise and leadership, Marjorie has not a grain of haughtiness. She is the first person to greet and welcome someone new with a radiant smile, and the first person to leap into action to help someone find a seat or clean up a spill. She really is a classy lady.

In her life outside the League, Marjorie is a UC graduate with BBA and MSBA degrees. She is a retired Procter & Gamble financial manager and CPA. She lives in Hyde Park with husband Gary.
